Water Vulnerability Index (VI) of Nepal and Bihar part of Koshi Basin
Water Vulnerability Index (VI): Water resource vulnerability accounts the main threats to water resources and their development and water utilization dynamics; and the capacity in coping with these potential threats to water availability. Four sub-components such as resource stress (RS), development pressure (DP), ecological health (EH), management challenges (MC)] are combined into water vulnerability index (VI) metrics. Water vulnerability index (VI) score ranges from 0 to 1 as follows:
lessthan 0.2 = low vulnerability (healthy basin)
0.2- 0.4 = moderately vulnerable
0.4-0.5 = relatively high vulnerability
0.5-0.6 = high vulnerability
0.6-0.7 = very high vulnerability
greater than 7 = highly degraded basin

- Purpose
- Using this indicator, one can identify which part of Koshi basin is relatively vulnerable in comparision to other sub-basins. At the same time, it also gives the overall index for the whole basin which can be compared the vulnerability index with the other river basin. The knowledge of vulnerability at basin and sub-basin level help to design adaptation plan to improve the situation.
