This checklist was prepared to bridge the existing knowledge gap on Wakhan and Big Pamir. Birds Biodiversity Wakhan Protected Area Big Pamir Afghanistan National Park Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) An annotated list of bird species observed by the Ecosystem Health Team in Wakhan and Big Pamir in July–August 2006 eng biota The Wakhan National Park (WNP) was established in 2014 and it includes the entire Wakhan District and home to about 15,000 people, most of them ethnic Wakhi or Krygyz. The park is said to cover over 4,200 square miles (about 10,878 kilometers) and borders Tajikistan, Pakistan and China. The region contains the headwaters of the Amu Darya River and is the place where the Hindu Kush and Pamir Mountains meet.
